Semrush Warns Bloggers SEO Changes Are Heading Your Way

Look out because some major SEO changes are on there way…  Semrush is one of the best keyword research tools around and by the very nature of their business these guys have a lot of insight into the SEO side of things. It is quite easy to bury your head in the sand and ignore the warnings however they usually come back to bite you at some stage.

Semrush highlight four areas of warning and the one that alarmed me the most is this one…

How would you feel if Google attached a “not secure” label with your blog’s URL? – Having a Secure HTTPs Blog is No Longer Just an Option

At first I thought this was no big deal as it is primarily only for pages that ask for passwords or payments. However while that may be true for now Google are moving towards giving an unsecured warning on all http:// pages sometime in the future and I feel having your blog set up with https:// will give you an SEO advantage right now and put you ahead of the curb for the future…

Here is a direct quote from Google

In following releases, we will continue to extend HTTP warnings, for example, by labeling HTTP pages as “not secure” in Incognito mode, where users may have higher expectations of privacy. Eventually, we plan to label all HTTP pages as non-secure, and change the HTTP security indicator to the red triangle that we use for broken HTTPS.

What a pain… I am fortunate my web hosting provider allows a free secure https for this site however I now have to spend time to switch over, plus learn how to do it. There is always a time thief lurking around the corner in this business. Oh well…

3 More SEO Warnings!

1. Google’s Mobile-First Index Means You Can No Longer Ignore Mobile Users

Google announced its mobile-first index towards the end of 2016. This essentially means that Google will now primarily look at websites from a mobile user’s point of view. Unresponsive blogs and websites will be demoted in search results.

2. Keyword Research Has Evolved Thanks to Google’s RankBrain

Have you heard of rankbrain? Google is getting smarter using AI and these guys have some rock solid advice about how to design your web pages accordingly.

3. An Engaged Email List Can Boost Your Blogs Search Ranking

I suspected this in the past but I never could prove it. Basically by having an email list you can bring people back to your site over and over again. This in turn helps your search engine rankings because you are getting more people showing interest in your site and hopefully people who are going to spend a decent amount of time on your site because they are already proven to be interested in what you provide.

It always pays to stay ahead of the curve and the above information is certainly more than handy…

Update: If you are reading this article for the first time hopefully you would have noticed my site is now secure https. It was a bit of a headache trying to work it all before I started so typically me… I just started the next day after writing this post and got it over with.

I tend do this with things. Just jump in and than I have no choice but to work it out. Thankfully it was all fairly easy. This site is hosted at 1and1  – it is the only site I have there at the moment and I must say my experience with them has been good.

Anyway… I followed their directions inside my account and easily set up an SSL certificate and it was ready immediately. I than used a plugin called – HTTP / HTTPS Remover to sort out all of the links on my site.

After messing around and messing up my .htaccess file a couple of times I decided to use another plugin called – Really Simple SSL. This plugin sorted it all out and I believe I could have just used this plugin to do what the first plugin did as well.  (Just search from the new plugins section of your wordpress site for those plugins and they will come up)

Finally I went over to Google webmaster tools and added my https site. Everything seems to be working fine except for a few images I may have to remove or replace.

Now all I have to do is sit back and wait for that avalanche of traffic to come – right?
